PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2023 presented by DAIHATSU

The Super500 PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2023 presented by DAIHATSU was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 23 to 28 May 2023.

Today we take a look back at this tournament, where we meet up with some of the players who have played at Orléans Masters Badminton.

 

Quarter-finals :

Men's singles :

The Indonesian Christian ADINATA, who held off Magnus JOHANNESEN who reached the second step of the podium a few weeks ago at the Orléans Masters Badminton presented by Victor Super300 (2 sets to 0 21-16/21-14), reached the semi-finals in 2 sets to 1 against the Indian KIDAMBI Srikanth (16-21/21-16/21-11).

Japan's Kenta NISHIMOTO lost 1 set to 2 to India's PRANNOY H. S. : 25-23/18-21/21-13. The country of Ghandi has another chance to reach the top of the podium with PRANNOY H. S. who will meet the Indonesian Christian ADINATA for a place in the final.

Taiwan's LIN CHU-Yi secured his place in the semi-finals after 2 hours of intense play, winning 2 sets to 1 against Japan's Kodai NARAOKA (17-21/30-29/21-19).

Hong Kong's NG Ka Long Angus failed to secure his place in the semi-finals. His Chinese opponent WENG Hong Yang won 2 sets to 1 : 23-21/14-21/21-14.

 

Ladies singles :

Current world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi (who took out Orléans Masters Badminton 2022 silver medallist Mia BLOCHFELDT) won her duel with Canadian Michelle LI in 2 sets to win : 21-11/21-14.

The Orléans Masters Badminton 2021 women's singles titleholder from Thailand, Busanan ONGBAMRUNGPHAN, lost 0-2 sets (20-22/9-21) to China's HAN Yue. HAN Yue will now meet the world No. 1 for a place in the final !

India's PUSARLA V. Shindu wins 2 sets to 1 against China's ZHANG Yi Man : 21-16/13-21/22-20

The Indonesian Gregoria Mariska TUNJUNG, currently world n°9, meets the Chinese WANG Zhi Yi, world n°2, in the quarter-finals. Indonesian victory 2 sets to 0 21-11/21-14. In the semi-finals, Gregoria Mariska TUNJUNG will meet India's current world n°6 PUSARLA V. Sindhu from India.

 

Men's doubles :

The Korean pair KANG Min Hyuk / SEO Seung Jae reach the semi-finals in 2 sets to 1 (15-21/21-16/21-14) against the Malaysians ONG Yew Sin and TEO Ee Yi.

The Japanese Tajuro HOKI and Yugo KOBAYASHI met the Taiwanese pair CHANG Ko-Chi / PO Li-Wei and qualified to meet the Koreans in the semi-finals in 2 sets to win : 21-18/21-16.

The Indonesian pair AHSAN & SETIAWAN lost 0 set to 2 (21-23/17-21) to the Malaysians MAN Wei Chong and Kau Wun TEE, who are one step closer to the title on home soil !

The Indonesians Leo Rolly CARNANDO and Daniel MATHIN won their semi-final by 2 sets to 0 against the Malaysian pair Aaron CHIA and SOH Wooi Yik : 21-18/21-19. They won't be far behind as they will once again meet a Malaysian pair for a place in the final !

 

Women's doubles :

Japan's Nami MATSUYAMA and Chiharu SHIDA meet Korea's BAEK Ha Na and LEE So Hee for a place in the semi-finals. The Koreans dominated the match, winning 2 sets to 0 : 21-16/21-17.

It was the end of the road for the Taiwanese pair HSU YA Ching and LIN Wan Ching, who lost 1 set to 2 to the Japanese Mayu MATSUMOTO and Wakana NAGAHARA : 21-16/12-21/16-21.

Another duel against the rising sun for the Koreans BAEK Ha Na and LEE So Hee, who will meet the MATSUMOTO/NAGAHARA pair in the semi-finals for a place in the final !

The Malaysian pair of Pearly TAN and THINAAH Muralitharan (who knocked the STOEVA sisters, regulars at the Orléans Masters Badminton, off the circuit) won their duel against the Japanese pair of Yuki FUKUSHIMA and Sayaka HIROTA in 2 sets to 1 : 13-21/21-19/21-16.

Korea's JEONG Na Eun and KIM Hye Jong continued their climb to the top by beating Indonesia's Apriyani RAHAYU and Siti Fadia Silva RAMADHANTI 2 sets to 1 : 21-15/18-21/21-16.

 

The country of the cool morning showed its superiority with two women's doubles pairs on the podium of this Malaysian Masters. Will we see a Korean Women's Doubles final ?

 

Mixed doubles :

The adventure comes to an end in the quarter-finals for England's Marcus ELLIS and Lauren SMITH (LS: Winner in Ladies' Doubles alongside Chloe BIRCH at the first super100 edition of the Orléans Masters Badminton in 2018) with a 2 sets to 1 victory over the Thai pair Supak JOMKOH / Supissara PAEWSAMPRAN : 10-21/21-19/21-1.

The Chinese pair FENG Yan Zhe / HUANG Dong Ping met and showed their superiority against the Japanese Kyohei YAMASHITA and Naru SHINOYA in 2 sets to 1 : 22-20/11-21/21-17.

The Chinese pair will now meet the Thai pair JOMKOH / PAEWSAMPRAN for a place in the final !

Korea's SEO Seung Jae and CHAE Yu Jung advance to the semi-finals in 2 sets to 0 against Indonesia's RIVALDY/MENTARI : 21-15/22-20.

The Chinese pair JIANG Zhen Bang / WEI Ya Xin lost 0 set to 2 (21-8/21-17) to Thailand's PUAVARANUROH and TAERATTANACHAI, silver medallists at the BWF World Tour Finals 2022. The Thais will play for their place in the final against Korea's SEO Seung JAe and CHAE Yu Jung.

 

Semi-finals :

Men's singles :

Indonesia's Christian Adinata was forced to retire, leaving India's Prannoy H. S. to continue his run towards the title !

China's Weng Hong Yang dominated his duel against Taiwan's Lin Chun-Yi and won his place in the final against India's Prannoy H. S. in 2 sets : 21-13/21-19.

 

Ladies singles :

Japan's Akane Yamaguchi (world no. 1) dominated the match and progressed to the final in 2 sets against China's Han Yue (current world no. 10) : 21-10/21-17.

This will be a Japan v Indonesia final, with Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung continuing her run of 2-set wins with another victory over India's Pusaria V. Sinhdu : 21-14/21-17.

 

Men's doubles :

Despite a turnaround with a second set win, the Japanese pair Takuro Hoki & Yugo Kobayashi lost 1 set to 2 to the Koreans Hang Min Hyuk & Seo Seung Jae : 18-21/21-12/16-21).

The Malaysian men's doubles pair reach the final ! Man Wei Chong & Kai Wun Tee won their duel against the Indonesian pair Leo Rolly Carnando / Daniel Marthin in 2 winning sets : 21-17/22-20.

 

Women's doubles :

Identical scenario in the women's doubles !

The Korean pair Baek Ha Na & Lee So Hee won their duel 2 sets to 0 against the Japanese pair : 21-19/21-14.

The Malaysians Pearly Tan & Thinaah Muralitharan qualified ( 21-19/23-21) for the final and will meet the Koreans for first place on the podium !

 

Mixed doubles :

The Thai pair Supak JOMKOH / Supissara PAEWSAMPRAN lost in the semi-finals to the Chinese FENG Yan Zhe / HUANG Dong Ping : 12-21/8-21.

Thailand's PUAVARANUROH and TAERATTANACHAI, World Tour Finals 2022 finalists, will meet the Chinese pair FENG Yan Zhe / HUANG Dong Ping in the mixed doubles final! Their place in the final was won against Korea's SEO Seung JAe and CHAE Yu Jung 2 sets to 1 : 21-19/13-21/21-17.

 

Finals :

Men's singles :

Indian victory, Prannoy H. S. takes the men's singles title against China's Weng Hong Yang : 21-19/13-21/21-18.

 

Women's singles :

World No.1 Akane Yamaguchi showed her superiority by winning the title in 2 sets against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung : 21-17/21-7.

 

Men's doubles :

Unfortunately, the Malaysians will remain on the 2nd place of the men's doubles podium... The Koreans Hang Min Hyuk & Seo Seung Jae win and take the title in 2 sets to 1 : 21-15/22-24/21-19.

 

Women's doubles :

Same disillusionment for the Malaysian women's doubles pair, the Korean pair Baek Ha Na & Lee So Hee wins the duel 2 sets to 1 : 22-20/8-21/21-17.

 

Mixed doubles :

The Thai pair PUAVARANUROH and TAERATTANACHAI landed on the top step of the podium after beating the Chinese pair FENG Yan Zhe & HUANG Dong Ping 2 sets to 1 : 16-21/21-13/21-18.
