Among the seeded players, the first surprise of the week came with the elimination of the Thai duo Kaosamaang/Thongsa-Nga, seeded 3rd, who were defeated in a thrilling match 21-19 in the third set by the English pair Hemming/Van Leeuwen. Reigning champion (with Liu Yi), Chinese player Chen Bo Yang, has also been knocked out. His new partnership with Liu Yang fell to the Danish pair Lundgaard/Vestergaard, the 2nd seeds, with scores of 21-15, 21-16. However, the Stoeva sisters had no trouble in their opening match, displaying calmness and confidence.
