Petronas Malaysia Open 2025

The PETRONAS Malaysia Open took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 7 to 12, 2025.

Let’s go back today to this Super 1000 tournament, where we find some players who have been through the Orléans Masters Badminton!

Men's singles

Quarter-finals

The first quarter-final of the draw sees the Taiwanese CHI Yu Jen and the Chinese LI Shi Feng face off. They both came to play singles in Orléans: 2017 for the Taiwanese and 2019 for the Chinese. After a match of more than an hour, played in 3 scattered sets (21-14, 13-21, 7-21), the Taiwanese lost to the Chinese.

World number 3, Anders ANTONSEN beat his opponent, the Thai Kunlavut VITIDSARN who played in Orléans in 2019 and 2021, in less than 50 minutes: 21-15, 21-13.

Another quarter-final pits a Chinese against a Taiwanese: the match here is fiercely contested between the number 1, SHI Yu Qi, and CHOU Tien Chen. For an hour and a quarter, the two men engage in a battle in 3 sets (21-16, 19-21, 21-17), which ends in victory for the Chinese.

The last quarter-final is played between the Japanese Kodai NARAOKA and NG Ka Long Angus from Hong Kong. The match, which lasted an hour, was played in 2 sets (21-18, 21-15), won by the Japanese.

Semi-finals

The first semi-final pits the two Chinese players who qualified for this stage of the tournament against each other. Despite LI Shi Feng winning the first set of the match (21-16), SHI Yu Qi takes the next two with big score differences: 21-5, 21-12. He therefore takes his place in the final.

On a mirror score, the Dane Anders ANTONSEN takes the lead over Kodai NARAOKA, in less than an hour: 21-14, 21-14.

Final

For the shortest final of this tournament (less than forty minutes): the Chinese SHI Yu Qi won the title against the Danish number 3: 21-8, 21-15.

Women's singles

Quarter-finals

World number 1 AN Se Young won in less than twenty minutes after her opponent, American Beiwen ZHANG, forfeited after the first set won by the Korean (21-11).

Singaporean YEO Jia Min faces Chinese WANG Zhi Yi in a forty-six minute match. Despite a first set lost on the wire (20-22) by Jia Min, her competitor takes the upper hand in the second set (21-16) and goes through to the semi-finals.

The winner of the OMB 2022, Putri Kusuma WARDANI lost in 3 sets and a little over an hour of duel against the Thai Ratchanok INTANON: 13-21, 21-15, 16-21.

The second Thai to qualify for the quarter-finals, Pornpicha CHOEIKEEWONG, reached the semi-finals after defeating China's HAN Yue in fifty minutes: 18-21, 21-13, 21-19.

Semi-finals

Facing Olympic champion AN Se Young, Thailand's Ratchanok INTANON lost in less than an hour and two sets: 14-21, 18-21.

The second Thai qualified for the semi-finals, Pornpicha CHOEIKEEWONG fought against the Chinese WANG Zhi Yi without managing to gain the upper hand. She was beaten in 2 sets (16-21, 12-21) and less than forty minutes. The Chinese will therefore play against the world number 1.

Final

The Korean won this first tournament of 2025 against the Chinese, whom she beat in forty-five minutes and 2 sets: 21-17, 21-7.

Men's doubles

Quarter-finals

We find the POPOV brothers, French well-known at the OMB since Christo participated 3 times while Toma has already come twice as many times and won the 2021 and 2022 editions, who are opposed to the Malaysians MAN Wei Chong and Kai Wun TEE. Unfortunately the French pair is eliminated by the 14th at the world level in 2 sets: 15-21, 11-21.

Facing the second Malaysian pair to reach the quarter-finals, ONG Yew Sin and TEO Ee Yi, we find a pair who played for the OMB in 2016: the Indians Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY and Chirag SHETTY. The latter secured their place in the semi-finals in less than an hour after a hard-won first set (26-24) and a more serene second set (21-15).

Other OMB champions, the English pair who won the tournament in 2021, Ben LANE and Sean VENDY, qualified for these quarter-finals. The English faced the Chinese CHEN Bo Yang and LIU Yi, world number 15. After forty minutes and after 2 sets with an equal score (21-17, 21-17), the Chinese forced the English to give way.

The last quarter-final did not last more than half an hour of play as the Koreans KIM Won Ho and SEO Seung Jae dominated the Taiwanese twins Fang-Chih LEE and Fang-Jen LEE (who played in the Orléans Masters in 2019): 21-11, 21-7.

Semi-finals

The Indians RANKIREDDY/SHETTY, n°9 in the world ranking, are opposed to the Korean pair KIM/SEO who repeat a rather serene match considering the score which eliminates the participants of the OMB 2016: 21-10, 21-15. The Koreans are qualified for the final in forty minutes.

While the second semi-final is very disputed between the Chinese CHEN/LIU and the Malaysians MAN/TEE since it lasts more than an hour and a quarter. If the Malaysians win the first set after a long duel (26-24), the Chinese win the following 2 sets (21-16, 21-15) and offer themselves their place in the final.

Final

The Koreans KIM/SEO play against the Chinese CHEN/LIU, whose semi-final was quite long, and find themselves again in a match that lasts more than an hour. They win the first set (21-19), but the Korean pair regains the upper hand in the following 2 sets (21-12, 21-12). The Koreans are therefore the winners of the draw.

Women's doubles

Quarter-finals

For the first quarter-final, we find a pair formed by two players who have passed through the OMB. Lanny Tria MAYASARI, who came in 2022, and her Indonesian compatriot Siti Fadia Silva RAMADHANTI, who participated 3 times in the OMB from 2018 to 2021, are opposed to the Chinese pair JIA Yi Fan and ZHANG Shu Xian. The match is led quite calmly by the Chinese who impose their pace for a little over half an hour, winning the match in 2 sets: 21-12, 21-11.

The Japanese Yuki FUKUSHIMA and Mayu MATSUMOTO took the lead over the Koreans BAEK Ha Na and LEE So Hee in one hour, defeating them in 2 sets: 21-14, 21-18.

The second Japanese pair, Misaki MATSUMOTO and Chiharu SHIDA (player who played in Orléans in 2019), meets the second Chinese pair qualified for the quarter-finals, LI Yi Jing and LUO Xu Min, ranked 6th in the world. The Japanese pair is eliminated by the Chinese in 2 sets: 16-21, 16-21.

The last Chinese pair, and not the least, engaged in the quarter-finals is number 2 in the international ranking. They are LIU Sheng Shu and TAN Ning. They are opposed to the 19th world, the Taiwanese HSIEH Pei Shan and HUNG EN-Tzu. In thirty minutes, the Chinese dominate the Taiwanese: 21-11, 21-8.

Semi-finals

The three Chinese pairs having qualified for the semi-finals, we first witness the semi-final disputed between one of them and the Japanese pair who passed the quarter-finals. The Chinese LI/LUO are therefore opposed to the Japanese FUKUSHIMA/MATSUMOTO. The match seems won by the Japanese without too much difficulty in view of the first set, but the Chinese hang on and almost extend the match with a third set. The Japanese win in one hour: 21-13, 23-21.

Here too, the semi-final between Chinese nationals was very disputed and lasted an hour and a half. The world number 2 LIU/TAN were defeated after 3 sets by JIA and ZHANG: 21-19, 16-21, 17-21.

Final

In a match that was once again very long, 1h35, the Japanese FUKUSHIMA/MATSUMOTO managed to win the last two sets to secure victory against JIA/ZHANG, eliminating the last Chinese pair in this last match of the draw.

Mixed doubles

Quarter-finals

In the first quarter-final of the draw, we find the winners of the OMB 2019: the French Thom GICQUEL and Delphine DELRUE. They are opposed to the Thais Dechapol PUAVARANUKROH and Supissara PAEWSAMPRAN, a pair who won the Kumamoto Masters and the Syed Modi India a few months ago. Despite losing the first set (12-21), the French recover the second (21-14) before the Thais win the last (7-21) and earn themselves a place in the semi-final.

The second quarter-final pits the Chinese pair CHENG Xing and ZHANG Chi against the Malaysian pair GOH Soon Huat (who played in Orléans in 2012, in the men's singles) and LAI Shevon Jemie. The first set won (21-15), the Malaysians are however put to the test in the second which they win narrowly (22-20).

Another Malaysian pair has qualified for these quarter-finals, CHEN Tang Jie and his partner TOH Ee Wei. They both played in Orléans, when their pair was not yet formed: 2017 and 2018 for CHEN, 2022 for TOH. They are competing for a place in the semi-finals against the Japanese Hiroki MIDORIKAWA and Natsu SAITO. After winning the first set relatively calmly (21-11), the Malaysians won the second 21-18.

In just over half an hour, the second Chinese pair involved in these quarter-finals, FENG Yan Zhe and HUANG Dong Ping, eliminated the Taiwanese pair YANG Po-Hsuan and HU Ling Fang (player who played in Orléans 3 times in women's doubles): 21-19, 21-14.

Semi-finals

The draw spares the Malaysians from having to face each other. The first, GOH/LAI, are in a duel against the Thais PUAVARANUKROH/PAEWSAMPRAN. It lasts a little over an hour and 3 sets, won by the Thais: 21-17, 12-21, 16-21. The Malaysian pair therefore loses the chance to obtain the title in front of their home crowd.

As for the second Malaysian pair CHEN/TOH, facing the Chinese FENG/HUANG, the match lasted ten minutes less, but ended in the same way: the Malaysians lost their match, here in 2 sets: 19-21, 14-21.

Final

The final therefore pits the Chinese FENG/HUANG against the Thais PUAVARANUKROH/PAEWSAMPRAN, a match that was disputed and uncertain until the last set. The Thai pair won the first set (13-21), then narrowly missed the second (19-21) before recovering the third (21-18) and taking the title after an hour and twenty minutes of play.

We'll be back very soon to relive together and follow the players who came to the Orléans Masters Badminton presented by VICTOR during the YONEX-SUNRISE India Open 2025 in New Delhi, India.
