The YONEX-SUNRISE India Open 2025 took place in New Delhi, India from January 14 to 19, 2025.
Let’s go back today to this Super 750 tournament, where we find some players who have been through the Orléans Masters Badminton!
Men's singles
Quarter-finals
For the first quarter-final of the draw, we find the Indian Kiran GEORGE, who participated in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the OMB. Ranked 38th in the world, he is opposed to the Chinese WENG Hong Yang who is ahead of him in 21st place in the ranking. The Chinese wins after a first set that he dominates 21-13 and despite an attempt by the Indian to hang on to the third set: 21-19.
The second quarter-final seemed to be a foregone conclusion for Indonesian Jonatan CHRISTIE, world number 3, who played his match against Taiwanese LIN Chun-Yi, ranked 15th. The public could see that rankings do not make a match. The first set was held by the Taiwanese although he lost 20-22; then the second set was a resounding victory in favor of the number 15 21-9; unfortunately, after all these efforts, the third set turned against him 10-21, with Jonatan CHRISTIE earning himself a place in the semi-final.
Another Taiwanese has reached the quarter-finals, the world number 9: CHOU Tien Chen who plays the match against the Hong Kong world number 20 LEE Cheuk Yiu. If in the previous match the ranking was confirmed, here LEE Cheuk Yiu defeats his opponent in 2 sets with a growing domination: 21-15, 21-8.
The only European to qualify for these quarter-finals, the Dane Viktor AXELSEN (n°5) played a tight match in the first two sets (21-19, 13-21) against the Singaporean LOH Kean Yew (n°13) whom he ended up dominating in the last set (21-8) and earned himself a place in the semi-final. Semi-finals WENG Hong Yang and LEE Cheuk Yiu meet in the semi-finals, separated by one place by their ranking. WENG wins the first set (21-13) then loses the next two sets (10-21, 16-21) against the Hong Kongers who qualify for the final.
The second semi-final is played between two athletes from the world's top 5: Jonatan CHRISTIE takes the first set (21-17) from Viktor AXELSEN before the latter equalizes (21-14) and then wins the last set (21-15). The Dane therefore meets the Chinese in the final. Final The final was played in less than an hour between the two men. While WENG, the world number 20, held on in the first set, without winning it (16-21), AXELSEN largely dominated the second (21-8) and took the title. Women's singles Quarter-finals The first quarter-final takes place between the Korean AN Se Young (n°1) and the Singaporean YEO Jia Min (n°13). The Korean, as usual, finishes the match in 2 sets (21-11, 21-12) quite quickly, less than forty minutes.
Then, in the second match of these quarter-finals, we find Indonesian Gregoria Mariska TUNJUNG (n°5), who participated in the 2016 and 2018 editions of the OMB, opposed to world number 13 PUSARLA V. Sindhu, the Indian silver medalist in Rio. If the first set is expeditious and won by TUNJUNG (21-9), PUSARLA turns the second in her favor (19-21), although she does not manage to take the third set (21-17). The Indonesian therefore takes her place in the semi-final.
The winner of the OMB 2024, Tomoka MIYAZAKI, takes on the world number 2, the Chinese WANG Zhi Yi. Although the Japanese won the first set 21-16, the match ended more quickly than expected with a forfeit by the Chinese.
Despite a significant ranking gap, number 4, HAN Yue was eliminated from the table by the Thai Pornpawee CHOCHUWONG (n°12) in 2 sets: 21-17, 21-16. Semi-finals Participant of the 2021 edition, the Thai CHOCHUWONG finds the winner of last year MIYAZAKI. The semi-final is disputed between the two women who first engage in a timid fight (21-11 in favor of the Japanese), then more fierce (24-22 for the Thai) which ends with a victory of Pornpawee CHOCHUWONG (21-19).
The Korean AN Se Young does not think much of the Indonesian TUNJUNG who nevertheless holds the first set (21-19) before losing the match in the second set: 21-16. Final Despite a remarkable run since the quarter-finals, Thailand's CHOCHUWONG was unable to find a way to take a set from Korea's AN Se Young, who won the title: 21-12, 21-9. Men's doubles Quarter-finals Half of a Korean pair from the world top 10, we find SEO Seung Jae and his new partner KIM Won Ho facing the Chinese LIANG Wei Keng and WANG Chang world number 3. After a first set won by the Chinese without much fear (21-12), the Koreans do not give up the second (20-22) nor the third (21-23).
Also from the world top 7 pair, KANG Min Hyuk plays this quarter-final match alongside his compatriot JIN Yong. They are opposed to the Indians Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY and Chirag SHETTY who played in the 2016 edition of the OMB. Despite KANG's experience, the Indians do not lose to the Koreans and take their place in the semi-final in 2 sets: 21-10, 21-17.
With an equal score in the two sets they won (21-18, 21-18), Malaysians Aaron CHIA and SOH Wooi Yik eliminated Thais Kittinupong KEDREN and Dechapol PUAVARANUKROH.
Having passed through the OMB in 2019 and 2023, the brothers Fang-Chih and Fang-Jen LEE (n°25) were knocked out of the table by the Malaysians GOH Sze Fei and Nur IZZUDDIN (n°2) in 2 sets: 21-11, 21-17. Semi-finals The reformed Korean pair KIM/SEO fiercely faced the world No. 5 CHIA/SOH in 2 sets 22-20, 21-19 and earned a place in the final to go for the title.
The Indians RANKIREDDY/SHETTY lost this time against the remaining Malaysian pair and not the least since they are the world number 2 GOH/IZZUDDIN: 21-18, 21-14. Final With a good run since the quarter-finals, the Koreans KIM/SEO lost the first set against the Malaysians GOH/IZZUDDIN (21-15), they nevertheless managed to recover the second with a certain margin (21-13) before letting the third set slip in favor of the Malaysians, 21-16, who won the title. Women's doubles Quarter-finals Almost ranked in the top 50, we find the Japanese Yuki FUKUSHIMA and Mayu MATSUMOTO who are opposed to the Malaysians Pearly TAN and THINAAH Muralitharan, number 7. Despite their performance, the Japanese are eliminated in 2 disputed sets: 21-18, 21-19.
The Chinese LIU Sheng Shu and TAN Ning, who moved to the OMB in 2023 and are world number 2, were knocked out of the draw by another Japanese pair: Arisa IGARASHI and Ayako SAKURAMOTO, the latter coming from a pair with a higher original ranking. Thus the Olympic vice-champions lost 21-15, 21-19.
The second Chinese pair involved in the quarter-finals of the tournament, LI Yi Jing and LUO Xu Min, went through the OMB 2023 (n°6) and faced the Hong Kong sisters YEUNG Nga Ting and YEUNG Pui Lam, 14th in the world rankings. The Chinese beat them in forty-one minutes: 21-12, 21-17.
The next match saw two pairs from South Korea face off: world number 10 KIM Hye Jeong and KONG Hee Yong against number 1 BAEK Ha Na and LEE So Hee. After 3 hard-fought sets and almost an hour and a half of play, it was finally KIM and KONG who won: 21-23, 21-19, 21-18. Semi-finals Malaysian TAN/THINAAH are opposed to those who took out the number 1, Korean KIM/KONG. With an identical score, the Koreans win in 2 sets: 21-18, 21-18.
Performing again, the recomposed Japanese pair IGARASHI/SAKURAMOTO eliminated the Chinese LI/LUO number 6 in 3 sets: 18-21, 21-13, 21-17. Final After performances from both finalist pairs, it was finally the Japanese IGARASHI/SAKURAMOTO who took the upper hand in 2 sets over the Koreans KIM/KONG: 21-15, 21-13. Mixed doubles Quarter-finals Malaysians CHEN Tang Jie and TOH Ee Wei (n°3), who came to play in Orléans in 2023, are opposed to Thais Ruttanapak OUPTHONG and Jhenicha SUDJAIPRAPARAT (n°25) who also played in the same edition of the OMB. The Malaysians win in 2 sets: 21-16, 21-17.
Our French players Thom GICQUEL and Delphine DELRUE, winners of the IMB 2019, beat the Japanese Hiroki MIDORIKAWA and Natsu SAITO in less than forty minutes and 2 sets: 21-16, 21-18.
Having come to play in Orléans from Taiwan, YANG Po-Hsuan and HU Ling Fang n°7 are opposed to the Malaysians GOH Soon Huat and LAI Shevon Jemie n°4, to whom they lose 21-11, 21-15.
The last quarter-final pits two Chinese pairs against each other: world No. 11 GUO Xin Wa and CHEN Fang Hui against world No. 2 JIANG Zhen Bang and WEI Ya Xin, who will be at OMB 2023. Played in 3 sets, the match is won by the No. 2s: 21-14, 18-21, 21-11. Semi-finals The first Malaysian pair to qualify for the semi-finals, GOH/LAI No. 4, faced the Chinese pair No. 2 JIANG/WEI. The match, which was initially very close in the first two sets, was finally won with a crushing set in favor of the Chinese: 18-21, 21-19, 21-9.
The French GICQUEL/DELRUE (n°12) performed well in the semi-final and managed to eliminate the Malaysian pair, world number 3, CHEN/TOH, and secure a place in the title: 21-17, 21-15. Final Despite a very good performance and controlled matches, the French GICQUEL/DELRUE did not manage to win in the final against the Chinese n°2 JIANG/WEI: 21-18, 21-17. We'll be back very soon to relive together and follow the players who came to the Orléans Masters Badminton presented by VICTOR during the Indonesia Masters 2025 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
