Hylo Open 2024

From October 27 to November 3, 2024, the Hylo Open 2024 took place in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Let’s go back today to this super300 tournament, where we find some players who have been through the Orléans Masters Badminton!

Men's singles

Quarter-finals

Sathish Kumar KARUNAKARAN, Christo POPOV's Indian opponent, has withdrawn. The Frenchman has qualified for the semi-final.

His brother Toma faces the Irishman Nhat NGUYEN. After losing a first set, the Frenchman regains control of the match and earns himself a place in the semi-final (17-21/21-15/21-15). If the two brothers win their next match, they will meet for the final.

CHOU Tien Chen, the Taiwanese, seeded number 1, is beaten in 2 sets by the Dane Rasmus GEMKE, finalist of the Orléans Masters in 2018, despite an attempt to win the second set and start over in the third one (13-21/20-22).

Indian Ayush SHETTY faces Finnish Kalle KOLJONEN and wins his match in just over 40 minutes (21-18/21-18).

Semi-finals

Toma POPOV faces the Dane Rasmus GEMKE, both of whom have played for the OMB. The French winner of the 2021 and 2022 editions quickly advances to the final after his opponent retired at the end of the first set (17-8).

Christo POPOV faces Ayush SHETTY and wins his place in the final in less than 50 minutes (21-17/21-13).

Final

The two POPOV brothers find themselves in the final of this super300. They almost replay the semi-final of the 2022 edition of the Orléans Masters. Only this time, the outcome is different: Toma, who won the match two years ago, is beaten by his brother who takes the Hylo Open title (21-13/21-10). A very nice French podium!

Women's singles

Quarter-finals

The women's quarter-finals are partly dominated by players from Denmark, with the exception of the quarter-final played by the Indian Malvika BANSOD and the Vietnamese NGUYEN Thuy Linh. The match turns in favor of the Indian player, who played at the Orléans Masters this year (21-15/21-17).

On the Danish side, a first quarter pits two compatriots against each other: Line Hojmark KJAERSFELDT and Line CHRISTOPHERSEN. The match, which lasted almost an hour and was played in 3 sets, is won by Line CHRISTOPHERSEN (11-21/21-14/21-16).

For the second quarter played by a Danish player, Mia BLICHFELDT played against the Taiwanese and seeded number 3 SUNG Shuo Yun. The match was won by the Dane with an identical score in the first and second sets (21-14/21-14).

The last quarter, including a player from Denmark, is played by Julie Dawall JAKOBSEN against another Indian player Rakshitha Sree SANTHOSH. The Dane, like her compatriots, wins and earns herself a place in the semi-final (21-12/21-17).

Semi-finals

Once again facing an Indian player, Malvika BANSOD, the Danish Julie Dawall JAKOBSEN lost this time, despite a tight first set (21-23/18-21). Malvika BANSOD won the match and qualified for the final, which would inevitably pit her against another Danish player.

The second semi-final is therefore played between two athletes from Denmark: Mia BLICHFELDT beats Line CHRISTOPHERSEN in 35 minutes (21-19/21-12).

Final

The Indian BANSOD, who played in Orléans this year, lost this final against the Danish Mia BLICHFELDT (21-10/21-15).

Men's doubles

Quarter-finals

We are witnessing quarter-finals contested mainly by European pairs.

The Danes KJAER/SOGAARD are opposed to the Scottish twins GRIMLEY. The match is disputed, but ends in 2 sets in favor of the Danes (21-17/21-19).

The quarter-finals were no more successful for the second Scottish pair DUNN/PRINGLE who lost their place in the semi-final against the English LANE/VENDY (13-21/17-21), winners in the men's doubles of the 2021 edition of the OMB.

Unlike the Danes who continue to qualify for the rest of the competition. Like their compatriots previously mentioned, LUNDGAARD and VESTERGAARD win against the Germans HESS/SEIDEL (21-19/21-17).

The POPOV brothers, who also passed their quarter-finals in singles, meet for a quarter-final in doubles against the only Asian pair. The Taiwanese LIN and SU lose to the French (21-18/21-14).

Semi-finals

Ben LANE and Sean VENDY face the Danes Daniel LUNDGAARD and Mads VESTERGAARD in a very contested match, won in 2 sets by the English (23-21/22-20).

The second Danish pair qualified for the second semi-final will get the better of the French pair. Rasmus KJAER and Frederik SOGAARD defeat the POPOV in a match where fatigue from two draws could have played a role (21-14/21-9), but the French still in the running for the singles final will not let themselves be defeated.

Final

The English LANE/VENDY, winners of the OMB 2021, asserted themselves once again in front of the German public by winning, in a tight and thrilling 3-set match, against the Danes KJAER/SOGAARD (18-21/21-15/21-18).

Women's doubles

Quarter-finals

As with the men's doubles, the pairs in the women's doubles quarter-finals mostly represent Europe.

Once again, we find a clash between the Danes: ANTHONISEN and FUERGAARD face KUDSK and SCHULZ. It is the former who win in just over half an hour (21-14/21-11).

A second quarter-final pitted the Germans EFLER/NGUYEN against the Scottish players MACPHERSON/TORRANCE. It was won by the players from the host country (21-11/21-14).

A pair of mixed nationalities faces the only Asian players in these quarter-finals. Margot LAMBERT, French and her partner from the Netherlands, Débora JILLE are eliminated by SUNG and YU (21-10/21-12).

The Ukrainians BUHROVA/KANTEMYR won against the Spanish LOPEZ/RODRIGUEZ (21-12/21-19).

Semi-finals

The first semi-final was the most contested and the longest. After one hour and two minutes and a 3-set match, Taiwanese SUNG Shuo Yun and YU Chien Hui secured their place in the final against Danish Natasja P. ANTHONISEN and Maiken FRUERGAARD (12-21/21-11/21-14).

The Ukrainians, Polina BUHROVA and Yevheniia KANTEMYR joined them in the final after a match half as long against the Germans Linda EFLER and Thuc Phuong NGUYEN (21-15/21-14).

Final

Unfortunately, the last European pair failed to get the upper hand over the Asian pair. The Ukrainians BUHROVA and KANTEMYR lost to the Taiwanese SUNG and YU (16-21/14-21).

Mixed doubles

Quarter-finals

Defeated in the men's and women's doubles, the Scots DUNN/MACPHERSON took their revenge together in the mixed doubles and won against the Danish pair VESTERGAARD/BUSCH (21-19/21-12).

The second Danish pair ESPERSEN/KUDSK involved in these quarter-finals were also beaten by the French GICQUEL/DELRUE, who had already come to play in Orléans (16-21/12-21).

The third Danish pair TOFT/MAGELUND were victorious over the English couple MAIRS (21-13/21-12).

The last quarter-final saw two French pairs face off: William VILLEGER, who had already played for OMB, and his partner Flavie VALLET won, in 2 hard-fought sets, their place in the semi-final against Tom LALOT TRESCARTE and Elsa JACOB (22-20/21-19).

Semi-finals

Despite matches played in 3 sets and lasting around an hour, the two French pairs were eliminated before the final by their opponents.

Thom GICQUEL and Delphine DELRUE defended themselves well against the Danes Jesper TOFT and Amalie MAGELUND (20-22/21-13/19-21).

For their part, William VILLEGER and Flavie VALLET also fought valiantly against the Scots Alexander DUNN and Julie MACPHERSON (20-22/21-18/21-23).

Final

Jesper TOFT and Amalie MAGELUND won the title against the Scots Alexander DUNN and Julie MACPHERSON (21-19/21-16). Offering a double gold to Denmark.

We'll be back very soon to relive together and follow the players who came to the Orléans Masters Badminton presented by VICTOR during the 2024 edition of the Kumamoto Masters Japan in Kumamoto, Japan.
